By Car

The campus of Dortmund University is located near the Dortmund West motorway junction, where the A45 Sauerland line crosses the B1/A40 Ruhr expressway. The Dortmund-Eichlinghofen exit on the A45 leads to the South Campus, the Dortmund-Dorstfeld exit on the A40 leads to the North Campus. The university is signposted at both exits.

By public transport

The "Dortmund Universität" S-Bahn station is located directly on the North Campus. From there, the S-Bahn line S1 runs every 15 or 30 minutes to Dortmund main station and in the opposite direction to Düsseldorf main station via Bochum, Essen and Duisburg. The university can also be reached by bus lines 445, 447 and 462. Timetable information can be found on the homepage of the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association, and DSW21 also offer an interactive route network map.

By 'H-Bahn'

The H-Bahn, an elevated railway, is one of the landmarks of the TU Dortmund. Line 1 runs every 10 minutes between Dortmund Eichlinghofen and the Technology Centre via Campus South and Dortmund University S, while Line 2 commutes every 5 minutes between Campus North and Campus South. It covers this distance in two minutes.

By plane

From Dortmund Airport, it takes just over 20 minutes to get to Dortmund Central Station with the AirportExpress and from there to the university with the S-Bahn. Düsseldorf Airport, about 60 kilometres away, offers a wider range of international flight connections and can be reached directly by S-Bahn from the university station.

Virtual Repairs: Working on the Future on Technical Futures

Repairs keep societies running, as they rely on a multitude of things and technologies which are subject to wear and tear or may break. Even in the much-discussed ‘throwaway society’, repair plays a central role and is becoming increasingly important in the face of current environmental crises. Digital technologies and infrastructures are increasingly being used to anticipate, plan and carry out repairs.

Through two qualitative case studies, the research project examines how repair practices shape the future. Although repair is usually understood in terms of its connection to the past – for example, in art restoration, architectural reconstruction or technical troubleshooting – repair practices also help to shape the future: as a practice, repair combines preservative and design aspects in a dynamic way.

The project explores how digital media and infrastructures are used to make objects virtually accessible during repair work. The analysis covers both short-term, everyday repairs to clothing and longer-term repairs to industrial textile machinery. The research aims to develop a praxeological understanding of virtuality that conceptualises the media-related and infrastructural aspects of repair, situated between preservation and creation, under current socio-ecological conditions.
