The campus of Dortmund University is located near the Dortmund West motorway junction, where the A45 Sauerland line crosses the B1/A40 Ruhr expressway. The Dortmund-Eichlinghofen exit on the A45 leads to the South Campus, the Dortmund-Dorstfeld exit on the A40 leads to the North Campus. The university is signposted at both exits.

By public transport

The "Dortmund Universität" S-Bahn station is located directly on the North Campus. From there, the S-Bahn line S1 runs every 15 or 30 minutes to Dortmund main station and in the opposite direction to Düsseldorf main station via Bochum, Essen and Duisburg. The university can also be reached by bus lines 445, 447 and 462. Timetable information can be found on the homepage of the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association, and DSW21 also offer an interactive route network map.

By 'H-Bahn'

The H-Bahn, an elevated railway, is one of the landmarks of the TU Dortmund. Line 1 runs every 10 minutes between Dortmund Eichlinghofen and the Technology Centre via Campus South and Dortmund University S, while Line 2 commutes every 5 minutes between Campus North and Campus South. It covers this distance in two minutes.

By plane

From Dortmund Airport, it takes just over 20 minutes to get to Dortmund Central Station with the AirportExpress and from there to the university with the S-Bahn. Düsseldorf Airport, about 60 kilometres away, offers a wider range of international flight connections and can be reached directly by S-Bahn from the university station.

We are seeking two student assistants for the project “Virtual Repairs: Working on Technological Futures.” This research project combines approaches from the sociology of technology and media and offers interesting insights into the digitization of repair practices and the relationship between technology and sustainability.

Start: October 1, 2026
Work hours: Approx. 8 hours/week
Project duration: until June 2030
Focus: Sociology of Technology and Media

This research project examines the use of media and infrastructure in the repair of everyday objects (clothing) and machinery (in textile production). It is part of Collaborative Research Center 1567 “Virtual Life Worlds,” an interdisciplinary research network based at Ruhr University Bochum (https://www.virtuelle-lebenswelten.de/.)

Your Responsibilities:

Literature review
Assisting with the organization and execution of events
Proofreading and editorial support for publications
Transcription of interviews and assistance with research data management
Participation in working meetings

We would be particularly pleased if you could also collect your own data as part of the project and, if applicable, use it for your B.A. or M.A. thesis. Your place of work is Dortmund; for events, you will also be at Ruhr University Bochum. Your working hours are generally flexible, and many tasks can also be completed remotely. A long-term position is preferred.

Your Profile:

B.A. or M.A. student in sociology
Basic knowledge and experience with qualitative social research and an interest in ethnographic research
Interest in the sociology of media and technology
Strong communication skills and a solution-oriented approach
Strong ability to work in a team
Good command of English
