Presentation by Cornelius Schubert: Patient generated data as "grey data

Patient generated data (PGD) from wearable devices such as activity trackers and smart watches occupies an uneasy space between medical and lifestyle information. Medical doctors often do not trust PGD, nor do they have the time to check large amounts of heterogeneous longitudinal data during patient consultations. On the other hand, the manufacturers of wearable devices make sure that their products are not considered as medical instruments, so not to be liable to any medical claims or charges. Patients who use wearable devices are thus stuck in the middle between these two poles of abstention. The presentation uses the term “grey data” as a sensitizing concept to address the indeterminateness of PGD and the efforts of the patients to make their data count.
